My interests have always centered on art in any form and I’ve always been drawn towards architecture and design. During my teenage years, my mother founded Valley Nursery in Poulsbo, Washington. On a plant-buying trip in Oregon, a grower introduced me to the art of bonsai. This initial exposure grew into a love of and interest in Japanese garden design. From that point on, after school, I would take on landscape projects for clients of my mother’s nursery. I later received training from Junkoh Harui of Bainbridge Gardens in Washington State. After graduating from high school, I was introduced to and mentored by Wendell Duncan. Wendell had been trained by Otto Holmdahl, Hap Johnson and Kenneth Kelly, all of whom are considered to be pioneers in Northwest Contemporary Landscape Design. At the time I met Wendell, he wanted to pass on the training he had received and the knowledge he had gained. I could not have been more fortunate, for he was a true master.
